{ Make It! } Creative Awareness For Mums Who Want To Be Happy

Using Creativity To Manage My Depression

Several years ago, as some of you well know, I had a serious car accident. I suffered Post Trauma and Depression which impacted the decision for me to leave my well paying graphic design job to care for myself.

During this time, I was looking for a ways to improve my mindset and help neutralise my thought virus cycles.

These were:

  • the feeling of being helpless and trapped in my injured body
  • unemployable and the impact it would have on my design career
  • tormented by my irrational and depressive thoughts of being a burden to my family

I was none of those things, but the depression was so overpowering, I truly believed every bit of it.

My daughter about three and we would paint out on the back patio. We would use watercolours and acrylics mostly. It was really enjoyable and surprisingly, none of those depressive thoughts entered my mind while I was being creative. BOOM! Idea...

So, after reading The Artist's Way by Author Julia Cameron, I then set up a very simple 3 step process to continue with this personally creative awareness process, I turned it into a mini workshop for myself.

I started to improve. The more I did, the happier I became.

While I was a graphic designer for 'work' it is very different to being creative for yourself and relaxation.

  • For work creativity, there is usually a deadline associated with the creative work, so there is a level of anxiety and stress to meet those deadlines, usually with someone who knows nothing about design leaning over your shoulder telling you how to do your job... nothing's ever good enough (even to your own standards) *rolls eyes* everyone's a bloody expert! LOL
  • For personal creativity, there is a level of freedom, expression, pride and achievement in your production. The difference is people leaning over your shoulder are either praising you for your creativity, embracing you because they feel the message in your work or are aspiring to do the same as you!

Can you see the difference?

So, I bundled up my self-imposed mini workshop into something other mums could apply really easily, with my guidance and soon the Creative Awareness workshops were underway. They even managed to get me on a local morning TV show for 4 minutes and a double page spread in Spotlight's Get Creative Magazine in the Creative SuperHero section.

If you go to Inspiring MumsTV on YouTube, there are testimonials and highlights of our workshops. While I don't run them anymore, their impact was felt and those who did attend took away some self care tools to help them on their happiness journey.

What I do To Stay Happy?

Answer? This... I colour my way to happiness!

Recently I came across these Chameleon Pens via Facebook. I was floored, they have brilliant coverage and graduated tones all using one pen colour at a time. I have really wanted a complete set of Copic Markers but as I am on a "Mummy Budget" as I call it, Copic pens are really a luxury out of my reach right now.

That's why did a little happy dance coming across these Chameleon pens! My pen fantasy became much closer to being a reality as they are much more affordable AND you don't need as many pens because of their innovative design and functionality.
